About the

The Tip Calculator works out the tip, the total and each person's share from a bill amount, and it updates as you type, so you can see what a different percentage costs before you commit to it. The split field divides the final total rather than the pre-tip bill, which is the part most people get wrong when they divide a receipt by hand. Nothing is uploaded, so a bill you photograph and type in stays on your device.

Where people use the

  • Splitting a restaurant bill between several people without doing the division by hand.
  • Checking what a 20 percent tip adds before you decide.
  • Working out a fair share when one person ordered more than the others.
  • Rounding a total up so the change becomes the tip.

How to use the

  1. 1

    Enter the bill amount

Type the pre-tip total into the first field. Decimals are accepted, so 47.80 is fine.

  2. 2

    Set the tip percentage

Type any percentage, or use the 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25 buttons. The result recalculates immediately.

  3. 3

Set how many ways to split

Leave it at 1 for a single payment, or enter the number of people to see an equal share for each.

  4. 4

    Optionally round up

Tick the round-up box to take the total to the next whole dollar, which is a common way to leave a little extra without doing the arithmetic.

Tips and best practices

  • Enter the pre-tax subtotal if you only want to tip on the food, not the tax.
  • Use the split field rather than dividing the bill yourself; it divides the total including tip.
  • A rounded-up total is the simplest way to leave slightly more without calculating it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the tip calculated before or after tax?

On whatever number you enter as the bill. If you want to tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the pre-tax subtotal rather than the receipt total.

How is the split calculated?

The final total, tip included, is divided by the number of people. That means nobody is left covering the tip on their own.

What if the split does not divide evenly?

Each share is shown to the cent, so the shares may add up to a cent more or less than the total. Whoever pays the bill usually absorbs the difference.

What is a normal tip?

It depends on where you are and the type of service. The preset buttons cover the common range, and the percentage field accepts anything, including values like 12.5.

Does it work with other currencies?

Yes. The symbol shown is a dollar sign, but the arithmetic is the same for any currency. Enter the amount in your own currency and read the result as that currency.
