About the

The Date Difference Calculator measures the gap between two dates and reports it as days, weeks, weekdays, hours and a calendar breakdown in years, months and days. The distinction matters: 60 days is two months in day terms, but the calendar breakdown counts real months of differing length, so it can say one month and twenty-nine days instead. It is the tool to reach for when you need to know how long a contract runs, how much leave you have accrued, or how many working days are left before a deadline.

Where people use the

  • Working out how many working days remain before a deadline.
  • Checking the exact length of a contract or a notice period.
  • Counting inclusive nights for a hotel or a rental booking.
  • Turning an age or a tenure into years, months and days.

How to use the

  1. 1

    Pick the start date

Use the date field, or type the date directly. Both dates use the YYYY-MM-DD format internally.

  2. 2

    Pick the end date

Use the End date = today button when one end is the present, or the swap button to reverse the two.

  3. 3

Choose whether to include the end date

Tick the inclusive box when both days count, which is what you want for hotel nights or a period of leave.

  4. 4

    Read the breakdown

Days is the headline figure. The calendar row gives years, months and days, and the weekday count excludes Saturdays and Sundays.

Tips and best practices

  • Tick inclusive when both the first and last day count, such as for a stay.
  • Use the weekday figure for planning work, and the day figure for elapsed time.
  • Subtract public holidays yourself; they vary too much to be built in.

Frequently asked questions

Why do days and the calendar breakdown disagree?

They measure different things. Days counts fixed 24-hour periods. The calendar breakdown counts real calendar months, which are 28 to 31 days long, so the two only line up by coincidence.

Does it include the end date?

Only if you tick the inclusive box. By default the gap between two consecutive days is one day, not two.

Are weekends excluded from the weekday count?

Yes. The weekday figure counts Monday to Friday only. Public holidays are not excluded, because they differ by country and year.

Which date comes first?

It does not matter. The tool orders the two dates itself, and the swap button reverses them if you prefer the other order.

Does it handle leap years?

Yes. Both dates are treated as real calendar dates, so a February in a leap year contributes 29 days.
