Download YT thumbnails Runs locally in your browser
Paste any YouTube link. The video ID is extracted automatically.
About the
The YouTube Thumbnail Downloader takes any YouTube link and returns the direct image URLs for that video's thumbnails, including the full-resolution version. It works by extracting the eleven-character video ID from the URL, so watch pages, youtu.be short links and embed links are all accepted. The images themselves are served from YouTube's own image host, which means you get the same file the video page uses.
Where people use the
- Grabbing artwork to reference when you design your own thumbnail.
- Pulling a still image for a blog post that embeds the video.
- Checking which thumbnail a competitor is using on a video.
- Building a link list where each entry needs a preview image.
How to use the
- 1
Paste the YouTube link
A watch URL, a youtu.be short link or an embed URL all work. The video ID is pulled out automatically.
- 2
Run it
Three URLs are produced: the maximum resolution image, the high quality image and the medium quality one.
- 3
Open or copy a URL
Paste the address into a browser tab to view it, or right-click the opened image to save it.
- 4
Pick the size you need
Use maxresdefault when it exists for the sharpest image, and fall back to hqdefault if the video was uploaded at a lower resolution.
Tips and best practices
- Prefer maxresdefault, but keep hqdefault as the fallback for older videos.
- Paste the plain URL rather than a playlist or channel link; only single videos have thumbnails.
- Credit the channel if you republish a thumbnail you did not make.
Frequently asked questions
Why is maxresdefault.jpg missing or small?
Not every video has a full-resolution thumbnail. Older uploads and videos below a certain resolution only have the smaller sizes, in which case hqdefault is the best available.
Can I download a video with this?
No. This tool only gives you the thumbnail image addresses. It does not touch video or audio.
Do I need the whole URL?
No, but it helps. The tool looks for the pattern of a YouTube link. If you only have the eleven-character video ID, paste a full URL built from it instead.
Is anything uploaded to a server?
No. The ID is extracted in your browser and the URLs are constructed locally. Nothing is fetched on your behalf.
Can I use the thumbnail on my own site?
Thumbnails belong to the video's owner. Quoting one alongside a link or a review is normal practice, but reusing someone else's artwork as your own is not.
