About the

The Weight Converter translates between kilograms, grams, milligrams, metric tons, pounds, ounces and stone. The metric side is decimal, so those four are simple powers of a thousand, while the imperial side uses a pound defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms and an ounce as one sixteenth of a pound. Stone is the one that surprises people outside the UK and Ireland: it is 14 pounds, about 6.35 kilograms, and it is still how body weight is usually stated there.

Where people use the

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

About 2.2046. Exactly, one pound is 0.45359237 kilograms, so one kilogram is 1 divided by 0.45359237 pounds.

Is a metric ton the same as a US ton?

No. A metric ton, or tonne, is 1000 kilograms. A US short ton is 2000 pounds, about 907 kilograms, and a British long ton is 2240 pounds, about 1016 kilograms. This tool uses the metric ton.

What is a stone?

Fourteen pounds, about 6.35 kilograms. It is still the conventional unit for body weight in the UK and Ireland, where someone might say eleven stone four rather than 72 kilograms.

Are ounces here the same as fluid ounces?

No. This converts mass ounces, one sixteenth of a pound. A fluid ounce measures volume and its mass depends on what liquid you are measuring.

Should I use weight or mass?

In everyday language weight is fine. Technically this converts mass: the same object has the same mass everywhere, while its weight changes with gravity. Scales that read in kilograms are measuring mass.
